The island

Sifnos is a member of the Cyclades, about 100 kilometers south of Athens, three hours by ferry. The island is renowned for its traditional villages, each with its own unique character and beauty, 365 ancient churches and monasteries, and numerous sandy beaches with crystal clear water. Although tourism has made the island prosperous, it has escaped the ravages of mass market tourism; the islanders offer the hospitality for which Greeks are renowned and remain connected to their traditional way of life. Even in high season, the beaches remain uncrowded – some have a few sun‐loungers for rent, most have tavernas selling freshly caught seafood accompanied by produce from their owners’ fields, and some are completely deserted. The fecundity of the land never ceases to amaze us and a network of hiking trails connects hidden valleys dotted with θεμωνιες (traditional farmhouses) and little family chapels. Spring hikes are particularly delightful, as the fields are all lush green and carpeted with wildflowers. To learn more about things to do on Sifnos and the unique culture of the island, visit here.
