The Wheatfield House
Sifnos

Landscape

The landscape design is strongly driven by ecology and sustainability principles. The land surrounding the house is designed to retain its original agricultural use and character. The planting plan uses endemic species for ecosystem preservation; and wheat and olives remain as the predominant crops on the property.

The landscape design features a series of large agricultural planters incorporated into the architectural design to take advantage of shading and collected rainwater. The planters’ bold rectangular forms and pronounced edges are intended reminiscences of the stone wall bounded agricultural fields on the estate. The herb garden and lemon terrace are planned in a more intimate scale and organic form, creating domestic ambience and a hospitable character.

The driveway and parking area are paved with rainwater permeable grass blocks, which allow grass to grow through and over the manmade surface.
